Winter Landscaping Tips
Oftentimes people let their landscaping fall to the wayside in the winter months, but there's plenty that can be done to keep your yard in tip-top shape and ready for warmer weather.
Trees, shrubs and hedges. During the winter months you can prune (or trim) your trees for shape as needed. You may also want to trim or cut off damaged or dead limbs. Additionally, you can prune your shrubs and hedges to allow for more light to reach them. If snow begins to build up on your trees, you can use a broom (or something to that effect) to brush off excess snow. Do not attempt to remove snow off of very tall trees yourself. Snow can be much heavier than you think. If this is the case, it is recommended that you look for a snow removal company in your area to help.
Lawns. One important tip that many people forget to do is to mark the edges of your lawn so that you can avoid damaging it when you begin to have to deal with snow removal. Towards the end of the winter months, you can begin applying mulch. Additionally, for your own safety and for the safety of your lawn, avoid walking on frozen or snow-covered grass.
Gardens, softscapes and more. Before and after snowfall, remove excess leaves and weeds from the area surrounding your plants. Depending on the types of plants you have, there may be special instructions for care during winter months. A landscaping company in your area should be able to help you with this if you are unsure.
Walkways and driveways. The best thing you can do to protect your walkways and driveways is to keep them clear of snow and ice. Salt de-icers can cause damage to your lawn and prevent plants from getting the water they need, so look for a de-icer without salt.
